New Modern Apprentice recruitment guidance

The HR team has provided guidance and a new video to support managers interested in Modern Apprentice recruitment.

The University is one of the largest employers in Edinburgh, covering multiple sectors and job roles. This makes it uniquely placed to offer interesting and varied career opportunities to young people from the community. Modern Apprentices typically join a team for 18-24 months where they will learn new skills on the job, whilst receiving a recognised qualification at the same time, which is managed by an external training provider.

What are the benefits of hiring a Modern Apprentice?

Since 2017, the University has supported more than 70 young people to take up placements ranging from facilities management to digital marketing. The benefits include:

  • Bringing talent, creativity and enthusiasm to a team

  • Addressing skills gaps in your team and helping develop new talent

  • Freeing up existing staff to take on more responsibility

In addition, hiring a modern apprentice supports the University's commitment to the Young Person's Guarantee and youth employment, including Strategy 2030, Community Plan and People Strategy.

Are you interested in hiring a Modern Apprentice?

All departments and schools are eligible to participate. It’s recommended that roles are advertised during the post-exam/school leaver window, from June - August. This is when young people are typically considering their next steps, and will give you a wider pool of talent.

New guidance video

We’ve listened to feedback on how to help managers understand what they need to do and when, and provided lots of useful guidance about recruitment, training requirements and salary costs to make the process as simple as possible.

A new video aims to help managers understand what is involved, and how Modern Apprentices themselves can benefit:
