The survey will help the University gain a picture of how staff and students commute.

The travel survey is carried out every three years.

Sustainable travel choices

Information obtained from the survey will be used to improve the provision of sustainable travel choices available to staff and students.

For the first time, the survey will gather data to estimate the University’s carbon footprint for business travel.

Reducing car use

Information retrieved from previous surveys has helped the University to implement measures to reduce staff and student car use.

The 2007 survey showed that just 20 per cent of staff and 3 per cent of students were driving (on their own) to work or study.

This is an exceptionally low figure compared to the City of Edinburgh as a whole, where latest figures show that 46 per cent of journeys to work are by car.

Data collected from the 2007 survey reveals that the carbon footprint for staff and student commuter travel was an estimated 4,869 tonnes per year or 0.15 tonnes per individual.

Available online

The survey is available to complete online.

All those who submit it will be entered into a prize draw and will receive a personal carbon footprint for their commute.

The survey will be available online until 2 April.
