Dynamic images of Edinburgh shared by students

Students have created a gallery of stunning images celebrating the Edinburgh community.

A photography competition invited students to submit an image on the theme of Edinburgh in Mind, to portray their thoughts and feelings about the city.

The gallery includes a range of dazzling images including the northern lights from Arthur’s Seat, the Meadows in the mist and incredible sunrises.

The entries to this year’s competition represented 31 nationalities.

The photographs were shortlisted by the University’s photographic society, Photosoc.

The winning photographs were then were selected by a judging panel including the Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Mathieson and Jessops.

The winners are:

2^nd prize – Ian Liang
Principal’s choice – Danghatai Wongthanaroj
Around the world – Ivana Paulusova
In the city – Yufen Yang
Looking ahead – Germán Mora Martín
People and community – Priscilla Lam
People’s choice – Sachinda Dulanjana

int photo comp 2020 Marilyn Mathew — 1st prize – Marilyn Mathew. The image has three qualities that I associate with Edinburgh. It has beauty, serenity and power. I was anxious when I had landed in Edinburgh but after 3 months of living here by myself I feel at peace and empowered, with Edinburgh engulfing me in its warm embrace whenever I look out of my window.

If you have friends in need reach out to them. This was a photo of the Aurora Borealis taken at Arthur's Seat to me it represents hope in this period of darkness

int photo comp 2020 Ivana Paulusova — Around the world – Ivana Paulusova. By going through my photos taken during a year abroad in Australia I am letting my mind travel again. Thinking of all the different beaches sunsets and other natural wonders I saw and people I met makes me feel nostalgic but never more hopeful there are better times awaiting again.

But even if the present is dark and blurry there is always a ray of light. It does not matter how adverse the situations are life will always find a way to break through and grow the roots to a better world.

The paths may seem endlessly winding but good company makes the experience enjoyable (or at least less exhausting!) with pleasant laughters along the way. Support from friends and family is an integral source of hope in these difficult times. This photo was taken at the Pentland Hills.

int photo comp 2020 Sachinda Dulanjana — People’s choice – Sachinda Dulanjana. And sometimes just sometimes when people say 'forever' they mean it. This is one of my favourite clicks which I captured at the Meadows in that misty afternoon while I was on my way back from the University.

These inspiring images show the different ways our students carry impressions of Edinburgh with them, wherever they are in the world. In this challenging year they have shared some thoughtful and beautiful images which we are delighted to share.

Students were invited to enter in one of four categories: in the city; people and community; thinking ahead; and around the world.

The annual competition is open to current international students, students who have had a Go Abroad experience and online learners outside the UK.

An online exhibition on the Edinburgh Global website showcases the competition entries.

A physical exhibition in Old College Quad is planned for Spring 2021 – If public health restrictions allow.
