Call for abstracts

We are pleased to announce the Scottish SIMposium 2024 which will take place on Tuesday 11th June 2024 at the Chancellor’s Building, Little France, Edinburgh. The theme this year being: “From Classroom to Clinic: The Transformational Power of Simulation in Healthcare”. This will be predominantly an in-person event with keynote speakers, short presentations, poster presentations. It will be possible to join remotely for the keynote speakers. The deadline for submission of abstracts is 5pm on Friday 19th April 2024.

  • Dara Byrne, Professor of Simulation Education University of Galway
  • Ryan Brydges, Professor in Technology-Enabled Education, and Director of Medical Education Scholarship at the Dept of Medicine, Unity Health Toronto & University of Toronto

The SIMposium is an opportunity to:

  • Raise the profile of simulation-based education and research within Scotland

  • Identify and develop collaborations within the simulation community

 

You are invited to attend this meeting and submit an abstract for presentation. We would like you to consider showcasing an aspect of simulation-based education that you believe is interesting, novel, or otherwise worthy of sharing with colleagues and which has a focus on its application to clinical practice. We welcome the results of quality improvement projects, research, or innovative practice.

Abstracts are welcome from a broad range of topics related to simulation-based education and which align with one of the following themes:

  • Innovations in simulation technology and methodologies

  • Curriculum integration and pedagogical approaches
  • Patient Safety, Quality Improvement and healthcare policy
  • Interprofessional education and team training
  • Improving patient experience
  • Simulation for professionalism and inclusivity

 

We encourage participation from anyone who is involved in either undergraduate or postgraduate simulation-based education or simulation research in Scotland, including those from medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, nursing, simulation technologist and allied health professions. 

Please note that abstracts that have been previously presented elsewhere will be considered. If you are presenting the outcomes of a research or an evaluation project, there must be at least interim findings to report.

Short communications will take the form of a 10-minute oral presentation followed by 5 minutes for questions. Poster presentations will be displayed throughout the conference, and presented by the authors using a ‘datablitz’ format, where presenters will have the opportunity to give a 1-minute summary of the key points of their work, using 1 slide.  Workshops will be for 90 minutes.  

 

GUIDELINES FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

  1. The deadline for submission of abstracts is 5 PM on 19th April 2024
  2. Please note the following for all abstracts: They should be completed on the attached abstract submission form.
  3. All should include: Title, presenting author, other author(s), organisation(s), Selection of theme of the conference this aligns to:
  • Innovations in simulation technology and methodologies
  • Curriculum integration and pedagogical approaches
  • Patient safety, Quality Improvement and healthcare policy
  • Interprofessional education and team training
  • Improving patient experience
  • Simulation for professionalism and inclusivity

Background including relevance to simulation-based education (what was the problem you were trying to solve?)

Description of method used/work undertaken (what did you do?) Discussion of the interest, impact/outcome (what did you find?) and novelty of the findings/work undertaken.

Practical application of work.

For workshops, please provide a description of proposed worshop in the abstract box in the submission form. 

If you are not offered the first choice of presenting, we may be able to offer you an alternative eg. a poster presentation instead of an oral presentation. 

Maximum 300 words in total, excluding title, authors, organisations and up to three references. 

No tables or figures should be included. Abstracts will be reviewed based on criteria as follows: originality, completeness, clarity of presentation, conclusions, and relevance for simulation-based education
