From Classroom to Clinic: The Transformational Power of Simulation in Healthcare

Join us for a cutting-edge conference on medical simulation and education.

We are delighted to announce that the SIMposium Event 2024 will take place at the Chancellor’s Building, University of Edinburgh on Tuesday 11 June 2024.

This conference is designed for healthcare professionals from across Scotland to come together to share experiences and learning around simulation-based education.

We are planning a rich and varied programme, which will include keynote speakers, abstract presentations and workshops.

 

Keynote speakers 

Prof Dara Byrne 

National Clinical Lead for Simulation at the Health Services Executive, Professor of Simulation, University of Galway

Bio: 

Professor Dara Byrne is the HSE National Clinical Lead for Simulation and the Professor of Simulation at the University of Galway. She heads up the recently established National Simulation Office (NSO) in the Republic of Ireland.

She has over 25 years' experience in delivering high quality simulation-based interprofessional education. She has extensive experience in ‘the business of simulation’ and has expertise in strategic planning, getting organizational buy-in, simulation space design and the running and operation of complex simulation facilities. In 2021, she project managed the design of the new simulation facility in Galway to deliver the award-winning 120m2 state-of-the-art simulation space.

 

She has a particular interest in faculty development and simulation standards of best practice. In 2017, she initiated and continues to co-direct the extraordinarily successful online Masters and Diploma in Healthcare Simulation and Patient Safety at the University of Galway.

She is the Director of Simulation at the Irish Centre for Applied Patient Safety and Simulation (ICAPSS) which is a dual accredited simulation facility located on a clinical site. The quality of the ICAPSS structure, organisation and outputs was recognised in 2022 with an ASPIRE award for excellence awarded by the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE).

Over the course of her academic career, she has sustained a strong record of achievement in medical education and patient safety research and scholarship. She is the senior author on ‘The Essential Handbook of Healthcare Simulation’ which was published in December 2023.

Bio:

Ryan Brydges holds the Professorship in Technology-Enabled Education, and is Director of Medical Education Scholarship at the Dept of Medicine, Unity Health Toronto & University of Toronto. He’s also the Director of the Applied Education Research Operatives (AERO) Research Group at Unity Health Toronto. His research focuses on how healthcare trainees, professionals, and the teams they form engage with various modes of self-regulated learning. He also tests the claims that current training prepares professionals for their future lifelong learning. He currently supervises many PhD students and medical residents who help shape and challenge his thinking daily.
