Research Open Evening-Spring 2024

Spring 2024 Research Open Evening

Come along and meet researchers, scientists, and clinicians at our drop-in research open evening jointly hosted by the Anne Rowling Clinic and the Euan MacDonald Centre for Motor Neuron Disease Research.

The evening will cover research into a range of neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory conditions, including multiple sclerosis (MS) and motor neuron disease (MND).

You will have the opportunity to meet with members of our research teams, including clinicians, specialist nurses, scientists, and researchers, to learn more about our current research projects in the areas of MS and MND. This event offers a great chance to gain insights into our work and ask burning questions about research or to simply learn more about the Anne Rowling Clinic and the Euan MacDonald Centre.

Programme:

  • Research presentations covering multiple sclerosis and motor neuron disease
  • Information on the University of Edinburgh's Fundraise Your Way initiative

Registration: This is a drop-in event, so there is no need to register to attend.

For further information, please contact the event coordinator, Pamela Macdonald.

For assistance, including venue access information, please email the Anne Rowling Clinic team.

About Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic

Anne Rowling Clinic logo

When J.K. Rowling’s mother Anne was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in the early 1980s, no treatment existed. Sadly, Anne passed away at the young age of 45. When J.K. Rowling herself turned 45 years old, she made a donation to the University of Edinburgh that founded the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic.

The unique welcoming environment of our Clinic aims to help people attending NHS out-patient and research appointments to feel comfortable and relaxed during their visit.

As well as delivering excellent clinical care, we are conducting world-class research to improve the lives of people with degenerative conditions affecting the brain including MS, motor neuron disease (MND), Parkinson's, and early onset dementias.

By combining clinical care and scientific research we are giving people living with neurodegenerative conditions the opportunity to take part in research studies and be part of innovations and discoveries that will have a positive impact for the future.

About Euan MacDonald Centre for MND Research

Euan MacDonald Centre logo

Motor neurons are cells that transmit electrical messages to tell your muscles what to do. Motor neuron disease (MND) gradually stops these messages reaching the muscles, leading to muscle weakness, loss of mobility and difficulties speaking, swallowing and breathing.

Euan MacDonald MBE was just 29 years old when he was diagnosed with MND. Following his diagnosis, Euan and his father Donald MacDonald CBE resolved to do whatever they could to ensure MND research was brought to the forefront of people’s minds.

The Euan MacDonald Centre, based at the University of Edinburgh, is a network of over 200 researchers across Scotland. We use research to improve the lives of people living with MND and related conditions.

Our mission is to:

  • undertake research into MND, both laboratory-based and patient-centred projects
  • deliver training for the next generation of MND research leaders
  • provide a network for those involved in MND research across Scotland
  • work with Scottish healthcare professionals and other charities to increase awareness of MND and MND research among the public

The Centre aims to make discoveries that will slow, stop and eventually reverse MND.
