12 Nov 21. SVDs@Target meeting
Edinburgh Imaging researchers led by Professor Joanna Wardlaw attended the final SVDs@Target General Assembly meeting in Munich.
The SVDs@Target General Assembly meeting took place from the 11th to 12th October & was the final general assembly meeting for the network. The first day was an opportunity for the clinical sites to discuss outstanding points & how to make the best use of the extensive range of data acquired after the main study objectives have been addressed, two years after the last in person meeting.
The following day presentations were given by each of the preclinical & clinical groups summarising key findings to date. Professor Joanna Wardlaw led the group presentation for Edinburgh, providing a detailed run through of findings from Investigate-SVDs, a collaboration with Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU), Munich & Maastricht University. Dr Anna Kopczak from LMU gave an update on recruitment for Treat-SVDs, a multi-site study including the Universities of Edinburgh, Oxford, Maastricht & Utrecht, & progress towards agreeing the final analysis plan, with the final participants expected to complete recruitment in the coming months. The team were also extremely grateful to hear from the Stroke Alliance for Europe (SAFE) about their efforts to promote the findings from the SVDs@Target project & explain their relevance to stroke survivors.
Work on the main results papers continues apace, while proposals are already coming in for sub-projects using the incredibly rich sources of data for research projects. The team are grateful to all of the participants & others who contributed to the development & completion of this work, & look forward to many future collaborations going forward.
Investigate@SVDs is the first time ever that patients with sporadic & genetic forms of SVD, that blood-brain barrier, cerebrovascular reactivity, vascular pulsatility & structural abnormalities, have been assessed in one study, & where the study took place not just at one but at three different sites. This represents a major step forward in understanding of SVDs & in enabling methodologies for future clinical trials of ways to prevent and treat SVDs.
