Film Screening: Chasing Ice

7-9pm, Thursday 17th September 2015 @ Room LG.08, David Hume Tower

Acclaimed photographer James Balog was once a sceptic about climate change. But through his Extreme Ice Survey, he discovers undeniable evidence of our changing planet. In Chasing Ice, Balog deploys revolutionary time-lapse cameras to capture a multi-year record of the world's changing glaciers. His hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate.

Travelling with a team of young adventurers across the brutal Arctic, Balog risks his career and his well-being in pursuit of the biggest story facing humanity. As the debate polarizes America, and the intensity of natural disasters ramps up globally, Chasing Ice depicts a heroic photojournalist on a mission to deliver fragile hope to our carbon-powered planet.

Fresher's Food Festival

2-5pm, Friday 18 September 2015 at Potterrow Dome

Every year, we bring together the best ethical food & drink providers in Edinburgh to share their vision and produce with students at the University of Edinburgh.

2015 is Scotland’s Year of Food and Drink. To celebrate this, the 3rd annual Freshers' Food Festival brings the best food businesses, societies and organisations from around the city to share their ethical and locally-sourced produce. Students can enjoy delicious free morsels, make their own pedal-powered smoothies, watch cooking demonstrations and meet local foodies enthusiastic about sustainable eating.

Neil Forbes, award-winning Chef Director of Café St Honoré, will be on hand to demonstrate simple, nutritious recipes and impart to students his ethos of seasonal food connected to producers and traditions.

"I’d like to say how delighted I am to be cooking at the University again" Neil said. "Young people need good food to help them grow strong, and to develop their brains as it sucks in all this new knowledge. Food stuffs like mackerel, grains and green vegetables can offer stimulus for the grey matter."
