Information about applying for postgraduate study for students from Germany.
We welcome applications from well qualified students from Germany. Currently, there are 458 postgraduate students from Germany studying at the University of Edinburgh.
To study at postgraduate level and join our community, you must first meet our academic and English language requirements.
Academic entry requirements for masters degrees
To be considered for admission to any of our taught masters programmes, you must normally hold a bachelor degree/Diplom/Magister Artium/Diplom (FH) in an appropriate subject from an accredited university or university of applied science.
Typically, the minimum entry requirement for our masters programmes is the international equivalent of a UK 2:1 honours degree. However, entry requirements vary between degree programmes, and some may require the equivalent of a First Class degree or previous study in a specific subject.

For those applying for Law, the First Examination in Law is also required with a final overall grade of 8.

Each application is considered individually as the personal statement is also an important part of the application. Where relevant, work experience may also be considered.

Typically, entry to PhD study is based on a masters degree in an appropriate subject.

We recommend you contact potential supervisors and discuss your intended research before you apply. You will probably have to write a research proposal to apply for your PhD. Talk to your supervisor about whether you need to do this.
English language requirements
If your first language is not English, you will also have to meet English language requirements to apply.
English language requirements vary between degree. Find the specific language requirements for your chosen programme in our degree finder.
Please note, you do not have to take a language test before you apply. If your application is successful you will receive a conditional offer requesting you provide your English language test results before the start date of your programme.
