Gemma qualified from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2004 with a BSc(Hons) in Physiotherapy. Working initially in the NHS including broad and then specialised orthopaedic and musculo-skeletal rotational posts, across NHS Lothian Hospital and Community settings, before specialising in Sports and MSK physiotherapy. Gemma joined the University’s FASIC Sport & Exercise Medicine Clinic in 2007 progressing to an advanced practice role by 2018.
In 2020, she was awarded a Masters with Distinction in Sports and Exercise Physiotherapy at Cardiff University. Gemma has worked with a variety of sports and their governing bodies including Rugby, Judo and Hockey including supporting the Senior Scotland Men’s Hockey team in their promotion to the European A division in 2017 as well as working at large sporting events including the Commonwealth Games in 2014. Gemma also works for the SRU with their age grade and development squad camps and is SCRUMCAPS trained and experienced in managing concussion.
Gemma has clinical practice sessions at both The Pleasance Sports Complex and FASIC East Lothian - Meadowmill Sports Centre and is the Lead physiotherapist for the Performance Athletes in Schools programme (PAiS) in collaboration with Edinburgh College and East Lothian Council Sports Development.
