The number of animals that were used in research by species in 2020. In 2020, the University carried out 151,669 scientific procedures involving animals. The vast majority of these involved rodents, predominantly mice and rats (78.4%), and fish (18%). (Please note, in 2020, we had a significant decrease in our animal use owing to the restrictions introduced by COVID-19. It is expected that these figures will increase in 2021 as more standard working patterns resume.)SpeciesNumberPercentageRodents118,97578.4%Fish27,17118%Birds4,7453%Agricultural species (cattle, sheep, pigs)5450.4%Animals monitored in the wild (sheep, deer, golden eagles)2130.1%Frogs20<0.1%These figures are calculated each year based on data from annual returns that are prepared for the Home Office by every Project Licence holder.Severity statisticsEach regulated procedure is assigned a severity which describes the animal's experience.
