Gavin Mackenzie

Teaching Fellow in Outdoor and Environmental Education

Background

Gavin Mackenzie is a Teaching Fellow in Outdoor and Environmental Education at Moray House School of Education and Sport.

Before joining the team at Moray House I lectured in outdoor learning at the University of Cumbria and adventure education at the University of the Highlands and Islands. I am a passionate educator and practitioner with a diverse range of experience in both formal and informal educational contexts across the UK.  As an educator I believe in the power of the outdoors as a place where humans can connect with the human and more-than-human through powerful embodied experiences. My personal and professional motivation is in directing these experiences towards inhabiting the planet in ways that are sustainable. My teaching and research is focused on questions of power and access in educational contexts, pedagogical approaches for contemporary living and outdoor learning in formal and informal education.

I hold national governing body awards in a range of outdoor activities and maintain an active participation in climbing, mountaineering and sea kayaking.
