Fiona Bowie

Teaching Fellow in Gaelic Education

Background

I have worked as a Primary Teacher in Gaelic-medium Education for the past 5 years. I initially worked in a Gaelic unit within an English-medium school in South Lanarkshire Council, and then took up a teaching role at a Gaelic-medium school in Highland council. I have taught at the Early, First and Second Level of the Curriculum for Excellence.  During my fourth year of teaching I embarked upon a Leadership course run by Highland Council and accredited by the GTCS. The 18-month course involved a school improvement initiative, leadership project and ongoing professional reading. I have an interest in the teaching of STEAM subjects in the Primary School. I noticed a lack of confidence in the staff in teaching Science and decided to focus my project on improving the teaching of Science within the school.

Before working as a Primary teacher, I trained as a Midwife. This training led me to become more interested in early childhood development and how early childhood development, attachment disorders and parent and child relationships impacts upon learning and teaching.
