About ESAT
General information about the scheme and who to contact.
Edinburgh Scientific Academic Track (ESAT), established by the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, recruits and mentors future scientific leaders.
The scheme aims to support outstanding scientists at the early stages of their independent academic careers with targeted support and development opportunities designed to enable them to develop the skills and experience required to achieve the next step in their career.
ESAT provides a clear framework of support and guidance for the duration of the fellowship so that the fellow develops the knowledge, skills and experience they require to operate as a lecturer or senior lecturer/reader at the end of the fellowship. On successful completion of the fellowship the fellow will be offered open-ended employment with the University at an appropriate level subject to a successful fellowship review.
Appointment to ESAT
Fellows appointed to the ESAT scheme will normally have secured a prestigious fellowship of 4 – 5 years such as:
- Chancellor's fellowship
- UKRI fellowship
- externally funded fellowships, e.g. CRUK, Wellcome, MRC, BBSRC
Nominees for the Scheme will be presented to the Research Committee for consideration and successful nominees will receive formal written confirmation of their appointment to the scheme from College HR.
ESAT process
The document below describes the ESAT process - from the award of a fellowship that may meet the ESAT appointment criteria to the final review.
ESAT outcome process
The formal fellowship review normally takes place no later than the beginning of the fourth year of the fellowship.
