Free bus travel for under 22s across Scotland

Young people under the age of 22 living in Scotland will soon be able to get free bus travel.

The Scottish Parliament has approved legislation to extend free bus travel to residents in Scotland aged 5-21 years old.

Anyone under the age of 22 who has lives in Scotland will be eligible for the free travel with the use of the National Entitlement Card (NEC) or Young Scot NEC from 31 January 2022.

You will need to have a new or replacement NEC or Young Scot NEC to access the free travel – previously issued cards will not allow you access to the scheme.

Public transport commitment

The Scottish Government confirmed free bus travel for young people in line with a commitment previously agreed with the Scottish Green Party.

The legislation follows new research commissioned by Transport Scotland that shows that almost two-thirds (61%) of young Scots agree that access to public transport will play a central role in the fight against climate change.

Around 930,000 young people across Scotland are expected to benefit from the scheme.
