Edinburgh prioritises free period provision for students

The University has recently signed up to Hey Girls, a home pack scheme offering free period products to students nationwide.

The home pack scheme will allow students to request products to be delivered to any address in the UK.

This is in addition to the University’s existing commitment to provide free period products at various locations on-campus as part of the Scottish Government’s Free Provision Bill.

This is a great initiative to be introduced in the University. No student should have to experience period poverty, and the addition of a delivery service prioritises the needs of all students regardless of where they are. It is also so important that we invest in sustainable products, moving towards our sustainability commitments as an institution.

Period equality movement

Hey Girls is a Scottish based social enterprise with a mission to end period poverty.

Since 2018, Hey Girls has been delivering sustainable period products to local authorities, schools, universities and colleges across Scotland.

The company manufactures and sells organic, eco-friendly and sustainable period products across the UK.

It’s great to see Edinburgh champion period equality for their students, recognising that access to period products is a fundamental right to both students and staff a-like.

Free sanitary products for all

In 2018, the Scottish Government committed to providing access to free sanitary products for students in schools, colleges and universities.

Scotland has subsequently become the first UK nation to offer free sanitary products for all, as part of the 2020 Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Bill.
