Professor Colm Harmon appointed as Vice-Principal Students

The University has appointed Professor Colm Harmon as its first Vice-Principal Students, a post he will take up full-time in October 2019.

Professor Harmon is currently Vice-Provost (Academic Performance) and Professor of Economics, University of Sydney. Professor Harmon has been at the University of Sydney since 2012, first as Head of the School of Economics and more recently as Vice-Provost (Academic Performance). Prior to this his academic career was at University College Dublin most latterly as Professor of Economics and Director of the Geary Institute.

Professor Harmon intends to spend some time at Edinburgh before October including attending the Learning and Teaching Conference in June.  

Professor Harmon will report direct to the Principal and will be a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

I am delighted that Colm will be joining us at Edinburgh. He will be the driving force behind the creation of a culture that recognises the parity of importance of teaching, learning and student experience with research and will take strategic responsibility for this commitment across the University.

Joining the University of Edinburgh at this time, with such commitment from the institution to ensuring our student experience is in line with our world leading research activity, is tremendously exciting for me.  Students, from all over the globe, come to Edinburgh because it stands for something, an experience, a sense of belonging to a community of excellence.   I will work hard to make sure we deliver that experience for our students and I look forward to shaping plans for this in the coming months in collaboration with colleagues from across the University and, critically, with the students themselves.
