Mental health is focus of wellbeing week

The University is promoting a week-long initiative to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing among students and staff.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Week takes place across the University between 12 and 16 November 2018.

The Students’ Association, in partnership with the Sports Union and University, has organised a programme of events aimed at supporting, inspiring and challenging the University community around a range of mental health topics.

With one in four people experiencing mental health issues every year, it’s important that we reduce the stigma, get together and start talking about mental health. This week is a perfect time to get everyone involved in the conversation.

Activities and Events

Students and staff are invited to take part in a variety of activities and events, including a wellbeing festival at Potterrow, a talk from the City of Edinburgh Council and a guided cycle ride to Craigmillar Castle.

On Tuesday 13 November, the Sports Union will hold a discussion on mental health with guests including former professional rugby player, Scott Hastings.

Elsewhere, author and mental health activist Hope Virgo will lead a workshop on eating disorder recovery at Teviot Row House.

Throughout the week, free yoga sessions will be held at different locations across the University.

Sport & Exercise is also offering all students and staff free off-peak entry to Easter Bush Gym, Pleasance Gym and the Climbing Wall.

This year’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Week is bigger than ever, with over 60 events happening across our campuses, run by and for students and staff. The week offers initiatives ranging from discussions tackling stigma around men’s mental health and eating disorders, to free yoga and mindfulness sessions – there are so many diverse ways to engage with the week. I can’t wait to see you there!
