University entrepreneurs win enterprise awards

Edinburgh students and graduates have been recognised for their entrepreneurial ideas in national awards.

They were among the winners of the Scottish Institute for Enterprise’s Fresh Ideas competition.

The contest celebrates the creative and enterprising talent of young entrepreneurs in Scotland.

Prize winners

The University was well represented in the competition, with several students and recent graduates making it through to the finals.

Zachary Bayham-Herd was awarded one of five £1,000 winners’ prizes for his idea, the world’s first peer-to-peer conservation platform.

Roy Hotrabhvanon and Fiona Inglis were also awarded a £1,000 prize for their wearable monitoring system that allows sports coaches to monitor the status of their teams in real time.

Lorn Jean Cowie won the Creative Industries category and £250 for her high-end fashion brand that is focused on innovation. 

Mark Batunskiy and Raimundo Gonzales made it to the final for their resource-sharing platform for backpackers and mobile virtual reality headset, respectively.

Ana Gonzales Ramos, who is studying MSc Regenerative Medicine, was shortlisted for the Health and Well Being award. She is working on an implant device to increase melatonin production and help tackle insomnia.
