Student shortlisted for first novel prize

An Edinburgh PhD student has been shortlisted for a leading literary prize.

Daniel Shand has been shortlisted for the Betty Trask Prize and Awards.

He has been named on the shortlist for his debut novel, Fallow.

Prize and Awards

The accolades are given annually to the best first novelists under the age of 35.

The winner of the Betty Trask Prize, to be announced at a ceremony on 20 June, will receive £10,000.

The other shortlisted authors will each receive a Betty Trask Award worth £3,000.

The judges this year were authors Simon Brett, Michéle Roberts and Joanne Harris.

Biography

Daniel Shand is currently studying a PhD in Creative Writing at Edinburgh.

He has performed his work at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

Daniel was the winner of the University’s Sloan Prize for Scots Fiction 2012, and the University of Dundee’s Creative Writing Award.
