Heating issues in central area

Exam advice for students resulting from emergency repair work.

UPDATED TUESDAY 12 DECEMBER

Changes to exam venues

We have been updating you since late last week on the problems with heating in the central area of the University – George Square, Bristo Square, Buccleuch Place and Meadow Lane (Ascham). While it has been possible to maintain the heating in most areas for the last 72 hours, there is a continued risk that the damaged pipes will suffer further deterioration and affect heating in the above areas.

We understand how important it is that your exams go well. So, in order to ensure that no exams may be disrupted by loss of heating, we are making some changes to exam venues for the rest of this diet.

The venue for most main exams scheduled in the central area will be moved to the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) from Wednesday 13 December 2017 until the end of the current exam diet. Please note that the date and time of these exams will not change - just the venue.

A small number of exams will not be moved, even if they are in the central area:

  • Exams that involve specialised equipment (eg computer-based exams)
  • Exams involving special arrangements for students with disabilities
  • (Additional heating arrangements will be made for these types of exams if needed).

This change of venue will affect you if you are sitting a main exam in the above period in any of the following venues between 13-21 December 2017:

  • McEwan Hall
  • Chrystal MacMillan Building
  • Richard Verney Building
  • Appleton Tower (unless it is a computer-based exam)

These changes will not affect you where:

  • Your exams are scheduled in any other venue
  • Your exams have been set up to accommodate special conditions or adjustments
  • Your exam is in an IT Lab in Hugh Robson or Appleton Tower
  • Your exam is a French Oral exam in David Hume

You will shortly receive (where possible) a text from us confirming whether your exam schedule has changed or not.

You should also check the venue for all of your exams on the main exam timetable website which has been updated to show the latest information:

Getting to the EICC

The EICC is in central Edinburgh, postcode EH3 8EE. Find it on Google maps at:

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Edinburgh+International+Conference+Centre+(EICC)

It is just under 1 mile from Bristo Square, making it a 15-20 minute walk or a 5 minute cycle from Bristo Square. There are cycle racks outside the main entrance of EICC.

EICC is also served by public transport including bus number 2 (which runs past Pollock Halls, through Newington, past Bristo Square to EICC in Morrison Street). The number 2 runs every 15 minutes Monday to Friday. There are also plenty of bus services dropping off on Lothian Road which is less than a 5 minute walk from the EICC. You can plan your bus journey at: https://lothianbuses.co.uk/getting-around/journey-planner

Once again, we apologise for the inconvenience but hope that these changes will provide clarity and minimise any further disruption to your exams this December.
