Winners chosen in 3 Minute Thesis contest

The winners have been announced of the Edinburgh heat of a global competition aimed at improving communication skills.

PhD students from each of the University’s three Colleges competed in front of an expert panel and an audience in the Edinburgh final of the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) contest.

UK finals

The competition winner was Maddie Long from the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences with her presentation ‘Language and the Brain: The Skye’s the Limit’.

Maddie will now go on to represent the University in the UK and Universitas 21 competitions.

Priya Hari from the Deanery of Molecular, Genetic and Population Health Sciences was the contest’s runner-up with her presentation ‘Senescence: The Emergency Break on Cancer’.

Audience members voted to award the People’s Choice prize to Edgar Rodríguez Sánchez from the School of Health in Social Sciences for his presentation ‘Understanding Gay Men’s Identities’.

Thesis challenge

First developed by the University of Queensland in 2008, the 3MT competition challenges research students to communicate the significance of their projects to a non-specialist audience in three minutes, with only one slide.

It enables doctoral researchers to showcase their work, and can open doors to new collaborations and networks for researchers and supervisors.
