Personal Chair: Brian McKinstry

Professor Brian McKinstry has been appointed a Personal Chair in Primary Care E-Health.

Brian McInstry

He graduated MBChB from Edinburgh in 1978 and went on to specialise in General Practice. He currently practises in Blackburn Health Centre in West Lothian.

He has also worked in medical education, and was Associate Dean for medical educational research in south-east Scotland.

Professor McInkstry’s research career has included a long-standing interest in the doctor-patient relationship and particularly remote consulting.

He joined the Centre for Population Health Sciences at Edinburgh and was funded as a Chief Scientist Career Scientist to explore the safety and efficacy of telephone consulting.

More recently, he has been leading the Telescot programme, which explores the effectiveness of telehealthcare for a variety of long-term conditions.

With colleagues from the Informatics School he is developing new technologies for monitoring long-term illness. He is clinical lead for the Edinburgh Health Services Research Unit.

In association with colleagues from Dundee he is Co-director of SHARE, which is setting up a large Scottish database of research volunteers to link people interested in taking part in research with suitable high quality research projects.

He is married to Ruth, also a GP, and they have three adult children.
