Honorary Professor: Seamas Donnelly
Seamas Donnelly has been made an Honorary Professor.
He is an international leader in translational medicine.
As an inflammatory cell biologist, his research interests have focused on defining key drivers of acute and chronic inflammation and translating these observations in particular to respiratory diseases.
His research epitomises classical bench-to-bedside work, where identified clinical problems are addressed at the bench and via in vitro and in vivo models brought back to the clinical interface for the benefit of individual patients.
A medical graduate of Ireland’s University College Galway (UCG), he came to the University of Edinburgh initially as a British Lung Foundation Clinical Fellow.
Under the guidance and mentorship of Professor Christopher Haslett, he helped identify key pathways implicated in acute inflammatory disease.
He was awarded a Wellcome Trust Advanced Fellowship and Honorary Senior Lectureship at the University.
Professor Donnelly returned to Ireland as Head of Medicine at St Vincent’s University Hospital and University College Dublin (UCD), where he is also Medical Director of the Clinical Research Centre.
He is co-applicant on the recently awarded Wellcome Trust Dublin Clinical Research Facility.
He is currently a Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Principal Investigator Programme Grant Holder and has obtained significant funding from the Wellcome Trust, European Union and international charitable funding agencies.
