New Information Security Essentials course

The University is asking all staff to complete updated Information Security Essentials training.

Staff will be automatically enrolled in the coming weeks via the learning module in People and Money and everyone must complete it by the end of the year. Any member of staff who did the training before 13 October 2023 are expected to retake this course. Staff who completed information security training after this date will not be required to do so again for two years.

The course aims to provide staff with a good level of key information on security risks and threats. It will:

  • Focus on the risks and threats seen across the University
  • Deliver content in bite-size topics using animated videos
  • Include a new pre-test to allow participants to demonstrate their knowledge without having to complete the entire course

As with other People and Money training, line managers will receive completion reports for their teams.

Postgraduate research students and visitors

Postgraduate research (PGR) students and visitors are subject to the same security requirements as staff so they must also complete the training by the end of 2024. Any new PGRs and visitors will do so as part of their induction.

For anyone without access to People and Money, the material is also available in Media Hopper. Anyone taking the course this way will need to self-certify and tell their line manager when it’s been completed.

Alternative formats

Anyone who requires the training in an alternative format should contact informationsecurity@ed.ac.uk
