Athena Swan Silver award

The University has been successful in renewing its Athena Swan Silver award, which recognises our significant commitment and progress towards gender equality in all that we do.

The University has engaged with the Athena Swan Charter for gender equality since its inception in 2005. The Charter is a framework that is used across the globe to support and transform gender equality within higher education and research. We’ve held an Institutional Silver award since 2015, and were the first Scottish institution to achieve this level of award.

Some of the highlights of progress in delivering our previous action plan include:

  • The development of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) data dashboards to support decision-making and planning;
  • Substantial progress towards gender equality in leadership roles and in the membership of decision-making bodies;
  • An increased number of promotion applications and successes amongst female colleagues;
  • The provision of quality leadership development programmes, including provision specifically for underrepresented groups;
  • Publication of EDI resources for the sector, both nationally and internationally.

While we are proud of the improvements we’ve been making, we know there is still a long way to go. The self-assessment process has highlighted areas we’ll prioritise in our plans, including:

  • Ensuring gender equality is embedded in strategic priorities and planning across the University;
  • Promoting equality in staff recruitment, retention, and progression;
  • Promoting gender equality in recognition and reward;
  • Promoting a positive culture supportive and inclusive of all genders.

We remain committed to progressing equality, diversity and inclusion in all its forms. Our action plan takes into account the specific needs and responsibilities of women, non-binary and gender-diverse people, and the intersection of gender and other protected characteristics.
