USS and Capita data breach update

Colleagues may have already seen that there has been a data breach affecting Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) member data being controlled by Capita.

USS have emailed affected members (where they held email addresses) this week advising the nature and extent of the breach.

In other communications, USS have also detailed the steps that they have taken to recover and secure the data and some they are suggesting members could take, including an offer to access Experian services for 12 months free of charge.

The University has received a number of enquiries from staff querying the validity of these messages and also the potential impact. Whilst we don’t have any further information or advice on this USS matter, we do think it is important for the University to confirm that the messages members are receiving on this matter are genuine.

Members should read the messages they have received and assess whether or not the measures being offered by USS to mitigate potential risks are appropriate to them. It is possible that the message from USS may have made its way directly into your Junk/Spam folder so please check that folder if you think you have not received it.

If you have any questions or need to be re-sent the message, USS advise that you contact them at the following email address: mydata@uss.co.uk.
