University supports global action on the climate crisis

Friday 20 September is a day of global action on the climate crisis, and the University is encouraging staff and students who would like to show their support to get involved.

The University of Edinburgh shares the deep concern about the climate crisis and the call for sustained and urgent action, with social and civic responsibility a key focus in the University’s new Strategic Plan.

It has been agreed by the Senior Leadership Team that a number of University events and stalls about the climate crisis will take place between 9am and 5pm on Friday 20 September. These will be organised across the campuses by the Social Responsibility and Sustainability team, and further details are available on the SRS website.

Subject to discussion with your line manager, you are encouraged to take 30 minutes during the working day to attend an SRS event or visit a stall. This is in addition to any time that may be taken for lunch.

By taking part in this way, staff and students can demonstrate their concern and learn more about what the University is doing. You can also find out what you can do as individuals to take action, play your part, and feed in your ideas to shape our future approach.

As a University we are proud of what we have done over decades to bring forward an understanding of climate and environmental change and to be setting an example of how to transition to a net-zero carbon University. However, along with this, we realise there is more to do.  This is why the challenges of climate and environmental change, and our role in helping deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals locally and globally, remain a key priority for our evolving strategy and actions.
