Help prepare a young person for work with Career Ready

The University is inviting teams and departments to participate in a scheme to give school pupils a valuable insight into the world of work.

A special call is being made for staff to sign up as mentors for the programme provided by Career Ready - a UK wide charity linking employers with school pupils.

The programme is aimed at giving young people additional support to make informed decisions about their future education and career.

It also serves as a good opportunity for mentors to gain rewarding, effective, skills-based experience and access to a talent pipeline.

How it works

The Career Ready scheme runs over two years, with mentors and mentees meeting 12 times over that period.

Each meeting lasts for 90 minutes, focusing on a different aspect of the mentee’s education or career path.

The scheme also involves a four-week paid internship at the end of the first year, which would be organised and paid for by the mentor or their department.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time as part of the Career Ready programme. You will be amazed at the way that relatively small amounts of your time can reap such huge rewards in the form of not only the growth and development of a youngster but also in your own growth as a mentor and manager.
