Academic receives Fulbright scholarship

An Edinburgh academic has received a prestigious Fulbright scholarship to undertake a nine-month project in the US.

Dr Catherine Bovill, Senior Lecturer in Student Engagement at the Institute for Academic Development, has received a Fulbright – Elon University Scholar award to enable her to carry out research, teaching, strategic planning and leadership development at Elon University, North Carolina.

Student engagement

Catherine has been selected to undertake a project focused on building student engagement through enhanced student-faculty relationships.

This will involve research to examine the nature of student-faculty relationships inside and outside the classroom and their influence on student engagement.

It will also involve teaching on the Elon University MA in Higher Education, and strategic planning and leadership development.

Educational exchange

As part of the Fulbright Visiting Scholar programme, the Scholar Awards provide the only scholarships available to academics and other professionals for lecturing and/or research in any discipline at any accredited US university.

The Awards form part of the US-UK Fulbright Commission’s work to promote leadership, learning and empathy between nations through educational exchange.

I am delighted and honoured to have been selected as a Fulbright Scholar. Elon University is regularly rated as the top US university in the National Survey of Student Engagement and has an excellent reputation for high quality learning and teaching. I am thrilled to be joining Elon faculty and students for nine months to benefit from such a valuable exchange of ideas, experiences and practices.
