Update on industrial action

Sarah Smith, the University Secretary, and Suzanne Trill, of UCU Edinburgh, give an update following recent strike action.

Dear colleagues,

Following the end of this round of official strike action, we are writing to update you with a joint statement from the University and UCU Edinburgh:

"At constructive discussions between UCU Edinburgh and the Principal and his senior team, we agreed that, within the parameters of action-short-of-a-strike, the student learning experience should be prioritised over the next few weeks and months.

We have also agreed that priority in this period should be given to supporting final year undergraduate honours students, professionally accredited courses and one year taught masters students.

The Principal has exceptionally agreed to spread over 3 months the impact of deductions of pay from those participating in strike action, and confirmed that there will be no deductions for action-short-of-a-strike in the interests of maintaining partnership working at this difficult time for our staff and students. We agree that we will keep this under regular review to ensure our joint expectations are being met."

Please note that, regarding the spread of pay deductions over 3 months, the March deductions have already been calculated based on the information payroll had on strike action up to and including 8th March. Deductions for the remaining days reported will be spread evenly between April and May.

Best wishes,

Sarah Smith, University Secretary

Suzanne Trill, UCU Edinburgh
