Staff invited to Senate meeting on 31 May

The next meeting of the University Senate takes place on Wednesday 31 May 2017.

All staff are warmly invited to attend the presentation and discussion section of Senate, which will focus on research-led learning and teaching.

This offers staff a valuable opportunity to consider and take part in discussion on a key strategic theme. Tea and coffee will be served after the session.

Research-led learning and teaching

What does it mean to teach and learn in a research-rich university? Institutions across the sector are grappling with how to articulate what we mean by research-led learning and teaching; how to surface and evidence the ways in which this is practised and experienced by staff and students; and how to promote a vibrant teaching/research nexus.

This session will help the University to generate its own unique narrative around the productive relationship between teaching, learning and research and how to promote best practice.

Speakers

Introduction: Dimensions of research-led learning and teaching

  • Professor Sarah Cunningham-Burley, Assistant Principal, Research-led Learning

Presentations will cover different aspects of research-led learning and teaching, with examples from different courses and programmes. These will include learning in a research mode, learning about learning, learning to do research and learning about research.

Speakers will be drawn from staff and students across different Schools and the Institute for Academic Development, and will include:

  • Professor Dave Reay (School of GeoSciences), Professor Pete Higgins (Moray House School of Education), Vanessa Ombura (Student, Civil Engineering)
  • Dr Meryl Kenny (School of Social and Political Science)
