Innovate and win

Staff with innovative ideas for improving human or animal health are encouraged to enter Edinburgh BioQuarter’s annual competition.

Now in its fourth year, the Edinburgh BioQuarter Innovation Competition offers £30,000 in prizes.

It is open to Edinburgh researchers and postgraduate students and NHS Lothian staff.

Entries must be received by 4 April 2014.

Supporting innovation

The competition seeks ideas for products or services related to human or animal medicine that will deliver benefit to patients and that can be turned into or sold on to successful businesses.

Five finalists will be announced on 18 April and an awards ceremony will be held in early June.

A grand prize of £15,000 will be awarded to help develop the winner’s concept into a commercial venture.

Past success

To date, the competition has delivered around £90,000 of prize money to 30 winners, three of whom have gone on to form companies based on their competition concept.

Last year’s first prize was won by a team of Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh anaesthetists for their potentially ground-breaking invention to help intubate patients during surgery.

Staff can learn more about the competition at a series of roadshows that will be staged around the University over the coming months.
