Equality on Senate agenda
The theme for the presentation and discussion section of the next Senate meeting is Embedding Equality.
The presentation and discussion sections of Senate meetings are now open to all staff.
Embedding equality
The University has a commitment, as well as a legal obligation, to ensure equality is respected and promoted within all its activities.
This has been the focus of several recent developments. For example there has been a surge in Schools applying for, and achieving, Athena SWAN awards which recognise work on advancing gender equality and the advancement of women’s careers in STEMM subjects.
However, there is a danger that these initiatives may produce only transient effects and not the sustained commitment that is required to bring about the needed cultural change. To this end, the University has recently published a report titled "Mainstreaming the Equality Duty".
This Senate meeting is intended to raise some of the issues that will be encountered as we move towards embedding equality in everything that we do.
