Milestones in student support

Students have been benefitting from a range of University initiatives since the inception of the Student Experience Project (SEP).

Launched 12 months ago, the ongoing project aims to enhance the experience of all students across the institution.

A collaborative approach has seen a project team work with staff from across the institution, in colleges, schools and central departments, including the Institute for Academic Development, Communications and Marketing and Student Recruitment & Admissions.

Progress to date

Among the SEP’s milestones are the establishment of:

  • a Student Surveys unit, which has streamlined processes involved in gathering and using feedback;
  • Student Information Points, located at the Main Library and King’s Buildings, which provide assistance and guidance about services;
  • new pre-arrival and induction processes designed to enhance support for new students;
  • more effective student communication practices.

Future developments

Further initiatives will be implemented over the next academic year. These include:

  • a monthly email newsletter for students;
  • online support for students using counselling services, such as the Big White Wall;
  • a refresh of the new and current students’ sections on the corporate website;
  • continued development of pre-arrival and induction practices in collaboration with EUSA and the schools.
"As the project moves into its second phase, we continue to focus on tying together its work with that of other initiatives aimed at enhancing the student experience. These include the Personal Tutor system and the work being led by Dr Sue Rigby, Vice-Principal Learning and Teaching, on recognising and rewarding excellence in teaching."
