Public recycling facilities launch

The University has been awarded funding from Zero Waste Scotland to install new recycling facilities across the estate.

The new “Recycle-on-the-Go” bins are designed to make it more convenient to recycle in the University’s public spaces, while capturing the value in materials commonly thrown away, such as drinks bottles and cans.

The shared recycling bins will begin to appear across the campus this month, with a view to full implementation of the bins across the whole estate by October.

Business targets

These public bins are an important step in the University’s wider drive to reduce waste and maximise recycling, as outlined in the Strategic Plan 2012-2016.

New Scottish Government legislation means that all businesses will be required to separate paper and card, plastic, metal and glass for recycling by January 2014.

For businesses in food production, preparation or retail a separate food waste collection will also be required.

In order to meet these targets, the Waste & Recycling Team is working towards ensuring the University continues to operate in a legally compliant, environmentally sound and financially controlled way, with regards to waste disposal.
