Retirement age abolished

From 1 October, the University will cease to have a fixed retirement age.

This is following the Government’s decision to abolish the default retirement age, effective from 1 October 2011.

Unlawful age discrimination

This means that it will be unlawful age discrimination for an employer to require staff members to leave employment by a particular age by reason of retirement.

From October 2011 it will be the choice of the individual to decide how long they wish to carry on working.

Staff responsibility

The onus will be on staff members to inform the University when they wish to resign or retire from employment.

Staff will need to give notice as set out in their terms and conditions of service.

Employees are encouraged to give as much notice as possible to enable planning, and to ensure that appropriate pension arrangements can be put in place.
