Award for Fairtrade activist

Graduate and Fairtrade campaigner Ben Miller has been awarded the Principal’s Medal 2009.

The award recognises staff or students who, as individuals or groups, have made a significant contribution to support or benefit the wider community.

The inaugural joint winners of 2008 were Senior Administrative Assistant Lesley Forrest and student and charity worker Grant Guthrie.

A Fairtrade champion

Ben was honoured for his ongoing work in Fairtrade campaigning.

His involvement in both Fairtrade initiatives at the University and within the city of Edinburgh have played a role in helping Scotland to become one of the first Fairtrade nations.

He has been an active member of the University Sustainability and Fairtrade Issues Group.

Outside the University, Ben served as the volunteer board secretary on the Scottish Fairtrade Forum, while still a student.

Summer presentation

Ben is now based within the University’s Energy and Sustainability office, working on the Transition Edinburgh University project.

He will receive his award during the summer graduations.
