Switching off in December

Staff and students are being reminded to make efforts to save energy during the festive season.

In December 2008 electricity usage at the University increased by nine per cent on the previous year.

During the same period, the University’s gas usage increased by 14 per cent on the previous year.

Energy-saving tips

To help the University cut costs and carbon emissions, staff and students are asked to:

  • Switch off all lights, including Christmas decorations, if you are the last to leave a building or room
  • Make sure no equipment is left on standby and unplug all non-essential items
  • Shut down your pc at the end of the day
  • Turn off kitchen hot water boilers before leaving for the Christmas break
  • Close the sash in fume cupboards if they need to run over the holiday period
  • Close windows and doors to prevent heat escaping.
