Securing long-term stability

We are an innovative, world-leading University that delivers ground-breaking research, excellent teaching and makes a positive impact locally, nationally and globally.

Like many universities, we are navigating significant financial challenges. Geopolitical uncertainty, rising costs and unsustainable funding for Scottish and other UK students have created significant strain across the higher education sector. While we are better placed than many in the sector, we are not immune to these challenges.

At the University of Edinburgh, we are taking responsible, carefully planned action to secure our long-term stability, remain financially sustainable and emerge stronger for the future.

Our vision

We will be an efficient and resilient institution committed to our academic mission, delivering exceptional teaching and impactful research that benefits society, and able to invest in opportunities that meet our strategic ambitions.

Our current position

The University is not in deficit, but our costs are rising faster than our income. Without the actions already underway, our financial position would be far more fragile.

Staff and students are being engaged throughout this period, and the University remains committed to avoiding compulsory redundancies wherever possible.

Every decision we take is focused on protecting high-quality education, our students’ experience and world-leading research, while safeguarding the University for generations to come.
