Academics celebrated in New Year Honours

Two members of the University community have been recognised in the King’s New Year Honours List 2025.

Each year on 1 January, extraordinary people from across the UK are rewarded for their service and achievements in public life, receiving orders of chivalry or official honours.

Professor Susan Welburn, Professor of Medical and Veterinary Molecular Epidemiology, has been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

She received her honour for services to One Health research and to disease elimination.

Professor Welburn began her academic career in Bristol before moving to Scotland, joining the University of Edinburgh in 2000. She currently has projects in Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia and Tanzania, focussing on interventions for disease control.

I am deeply honoured with this award that reflects more than 30 years of effort to eliminate human sleeping sickness from Sub Saharan Africa, one of the most serious of the neglected tropical diseases. This effort has involved more than 65 postgraduate students from both the University of Edinburgh and Makerere University, Uganda and has shown the clear value of One Health Practice, embracing a holistic approach to zoonotic disease elimination.

Services to Digital Humanities

Professor Melissa Terras, Professor of Digital Cultural Heritage, has become a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

She received her title for services to Digital Humanities.

Professor Terras joined the University of Edinburgh in 2017 from University College London. She is the director of Creative Informatics, a vital hub for the Edinburgh's city’s world-class creative industries and tech sector

This recognition for my work in the use of computing in the arts and humanities shows how important digital methods now are in the study of human society and the past. It has been such an exciting and vibrant field to work in over the past 25 years, and getting this honour demonstrates that this new area is now firmly established. I’m thankful to all the galleries, libraries, archives and museums who I’ve worked with on digital projects, as we are dependent on their wonderful content to digitize, mine, and reuse.

The announcement of this year’s recipients was published in the official newspaper of the Crown, The Gazette.
