A a queer data showcase, an exhibition on student activism and a talk on marriage equality are some of the highlights from events being held across the University throughout June.

The events mark Pride, a national celebration which recognises LGBT+ communities, their history and culture.

The Progress Pride flag –with colours representing LGBT+ communities – will be raised at Old College during Pride Edinburgh later in the month.

On campus

Touring the University’s campuses, staff and students can visit the 'We have always been here. And we always will be' exhibition which is currently on display in the Usher Building at Edinburgh BioQuarter.

The exhibition was co-created by Ash Scholz, History and Politics student and student ambassador, alongside a volunteer group in the Centre for Research Collections. It explores the work of queer student activists and community members throughout the University’s history.

On Thursday 5 June, the AI Ethics & Society will spotlight a selection of artists, academics and activists working on queer data projects. Participants will hear from a line-up of data enthusiasts, covering everything from hashtags to multimedia jazz improv.

Elsewhere, the University’s Gender + Sexuality Data Lab will host a public talk with Cornell Professor, Dr Jamie Budnick on Wednesday 11 June.

Dr Budnick will explore the debate into marriage equality, with a particular focus on same-sex marriage cases at the United States Supreme Court.

On Tuesday 17 June, staff at IRR South Building, Edinburgh BioQuarter, will run a charity bake sale, with donations going to LGBT Health & Wellbeing, an Edinburgh-based charity supporting LGBTQ+ adults in Scotland.

Later in the month, the Bayes Centre will host a talk by Johns Hopkins University’s Emily Riehl for the LMS Hardy Lecture 2025. Professor Riehl will share her journey as a queer mathematician and will explore the concept of mathematical equality.

Pride march

Scotland’s longest-running celebration of diversity, Pride Edinburgh will take place on Saturday 21 June, with free events happening across the capital.

The Pride march will begin at 12:30pm at Scottish Parliament and will finish at the Festival Village in Bristo Square.

From 2pm, the Festival Village will play host to Pride Edinburgh’s main stage with a range of headline artists, DJ sets and performances.
