A preview of Edinburgh International Science Festival 2018
The Easter holidays are approaching which means it’s almost time for the Edinburgh International Science Festival. As per previous years the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine is well represented in events for every interest and age group.
We have highlighted a selection of events below.
Revolutionising Cancer Treatments
Saturday 31 March - Wednesday 4 April. 10.00am – 4.30pm.
Our scientists will be providing an insight into how they are working to make cancer treatments safer and more effective. Take part in activities that show how nanoparticles of one of the most famous chemical elements – gold – could help deliver medicine to patients.
From Bench to Bedside and Beyond
Tuesday 3 April. 5.30pm
It takes an average of 12 years for a drug to travel from the research lab bench to the patient’s bedside. Discussing how new medical treatments are progressed from 'bench to bedside' in the cutting-edge field of stem cell research, health journalist Pennie Taylor is joined by Hans Möller, Prof Anna Williams, Dr Tilo Kunath and Dr Lindsay Fraser.
Amazing Bodies: From Science to Future Medicine
Thursday 5 and Friday 6 April. 10.00am - 4.30pm
Colleagues from across the College will be collaborating for two days of hands on activities at the National Museum of Scotland. They will be inviting attendees to find out how science will advance future medicine through genomics, stem cells and new technologies, to experience how lungs inflate and what is inside the body.
The Healthcare Revolution
Thursday 5 April. 5.30pm – 6.45pm
Join Prof Bruce Whitelaw and Dr Andrew Wood to explore the science behind the revolutionary technique of CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, how it might be used and how soon we can expect it to be translated into therapies for human patients.
Amazing Immunology
Monday 9 April – Thursday 12 April. 12midday – 1.00pm
Denny and the T-Team are back with new discoveries. Attendees can get active and crafty with new games that explain how the body’s immune cells protect you from disease and keep you healthy.
Realistic Medicine, Data and Me
Wednesday 11 April. 5.30pm – 7.00pm
Realistic Medicine puts the person receiving care at the heart of decision-making and creates a personalised approach to how this is given. The Cancer Innovation Challenge is a Scottish Funding Council funded project encouraging open innovation around data to improve cancer care and outcomes in Scotland.
What role can these innovations around data play in the delivery of Realistic Medicine? Join Dr Catherine Calderwood and Gillian Docherty, Prof Sarah Cunningham-Burley and Ian Welsh OBE in conversation with Dr Brian Robson for a panel discussion on the topic.
The Antibiotic Crisis – Who is to Blame?
Wednesday 11 April. 6.30pm – 7.30pm
The rise of antimicrobial resistance has been described as a global health crisis that threatens to undermine much of modern medicine and healthcare. How should we react? Is this a crisis rooted in our hospitals, or should we be more concerned about our GPs? Who should we listen to when we hear contradictory advice about whether or not to go on taking antibiotics, even once we feel better?
Hear the latest thinking on these issues from Prof Mark Woolhouse and Chair, Prof Derek Bell, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
