Infection Medicine

Dr Richard Sloan joins DIPM

Dr Sloan joins the division as a Principal Investigator.

Richard has joined us as a Lecturer in Virology from Barts and The London School of Medicine. Richard got his PhD in virology at University College London (UCL) and spent five years as a postdoctoral fellow at the McGill AIDS Centre in Montreal, followed by three years as an independent research fellow at Barts and The London School of Medicine before joining us here at Edinburgh.

His research is in the field of HIV/AIDS, and he aims to understand how cell intrinsic innate immunity can control HIV infection. This could identify new forms of antiviral therapy and help explain disease susceptibility within individuals and throughout populations. To do this he identifies new antiviral factors using screening technologies and screen data, often in collaboration with other groups, such as Chen Liang (McGill University, Montreal) and Áine McKnight (Barts and The London School of Medicine). While he also collaborates with George Kassiotis (The Francis Crick Institute) to develop models of retroviral immune control.

Richard will have responsibility for delivering teaching at Zhejiang University, China through their partnership with Edinburgh University Biomedical Sciences.
