The Great War and Modern Scotland
Come to our free lecture examining the way in which the Great War has been seen as a watershed in modern Scottish history.
Lecture details Tuesday 12 August 2014, 1.00pm Meadows Lecture Theatre, Doorway 4, Old Medical School, Teviot Place
Synopsis
The former Secretary of State for Scotland Ian Lang has argued that independence would dishonour Scotland's war dead. In a debate in the Scottish Parliament in June 2013, highly exaggerated claims were made about the extent of Scotland's war losses. This suggests that the history and memory of the Great War remains a contested aspect of contemporary Scottish politics.
Rethinking the past
This lecture will highlight some of the effects of this event of global significance on Scotland and the Scots, and look at the ways in which competing interpretations of the war have coloured our view of it over the course of the last century.
