School of History, Classics & Archaeology

Archaeology teaching workshop

This workshop is organised by Emily Johnston, Kirsty Lilley and Lusia Zaleskaya, three PhD candidates and undergraduate tutors within the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh, with several years of teaching experience on courses in the Archaeology and Classics subject areas at the University of Edinburgh. They are very interested in collaboratively developing approaches and effectiveness as educators and communicators. In particular, they would be keen to focus on adult/university education in archaeology, given that the majority of pedagogical discussions are directed towards either younger audiences or the general public.

To do this, Edinburgh’s Institute for Academic Development is supporting this teaching workshop, comprising a day of roundtable discussions and collaborative work, with the aim of producing a set of best practices and innovative ideas that which can then be applied in the classroom and in wider settings.

Who should attend

The workshop is open to people from across the sector who can share their experiences of working with different audiences and using diverse engagement techniques which can be transferable to a higher education setting. This full-day event will be held in person, but there is the possibility of running it as a hybrid event if there is sufficient interest in online participation.

It is hoped that issues for discussion will be identified by participants/contributors in advance, and that it is not Edinburgh- or academia-centric. A key output could, in theory, be a framework for archaeology education (similar in format to ScARF research frameworks), which also identifies teaching ‘gaps’.

Refreshments and lunch will be provided, and the event will take place in Teviot Lecture Theatre in the Old Medical School, which is on the ground floor and wheelchair accessible, with lift access to other parts of the building.
