Julius Nyerere - among the most important political leaders of the 20th century attended the University of Edinburgh from 1949 to 1952 and took courses in History. He was the President of Tanzania from independence until 1985, however his impact as a political and intellectual leader went far beyond this. As well as playing a prominent role in the anti-colonial struggle and in the fight against apartheid, he is renowned for his contributions to political philosophy, education and pan-Africanism.

Dr Ng’wanza Kamata

Dr Ng’wanza Kamata is a Senior Lecturer in Political Science at the University of Dar es Salaam. He is a graduate of the University of Dar es Salaam and obtained his Ph.D in Political Science in 2005 from the same University. He is currently Head of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at the University of Dar es Salaam. He has published over a dozen articles. His most recent published work is ‘Development as Rebellion: A biography of Julius Nyerere’ (2020) which he co-authored with Professors Issa G. Shivji, and Saïda Yahya-Othman.
