The course is designed for students who already have an advanced knowledge of Chinese language and Chinese native speakers. If not a native speaker, Visiting Students must have passed Chinese 2C (ASST08050) or equivalent at grade B or above. **Please see Additional Restrictions below**
Course Summary
The module aims to equip students with skills in translation from Chinese into English and English into Chinese. Students will develop intellectual perspectives on the activity of translation and expand topic-based vocabulary. The course is open to students for whom English is a native language and who have a high level of Chinese (above HSK5, have passed Chinese 2C ASST08050, over 2500 Chinese vocabulary), as well as Chinese native speakers. This course runs in semester 1 and semester 2 (repeated course).
Course Description
The course is designed for students who already have an advanced knowledge of Chinese language, and is also open to Chinese native speakers. Foundation English-Chinese Translation (one-semester course) is an exciting opportunity for students to develop skills as a translator, equipping them with skills important for work in the fast-growing translation-services industry. They will experiment with different genres through practical translation activities. They will also explore how practical translation is informed by theory; develop written communication skills between Chinese and English; and learn how to use language skills to translate effectively. This course contains two 2-hour tutorials every week for ten weeks. Students will be assessed via coursework and end-of-term exam.
