Inequalities and bias in schools: reasons, research and reactions

Join us for this interactive workshop with Dr Katherin Barg, Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Bristol on Friday 17 November 2023.

This interactive workshop gives an overview over ‘traditional’ and recent academic research on socioeconomic and ethnic inequalities in education and the role of teacher-student relationships. The workshop explores theories and evidence around self-fulfilling prophecies in the classroom, the impact of teacher expectations on students and potential biases in teachers’ perceptions of students’ academic abilities and attitudes.

A key element of the workshop is the presentation of recent findings from the BIPE-project, a project on social and ethnic biases in primary school, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Katherin and the project team analysed representative data on thousands of students in Scotland and England, and found important discrepancies between teachers’ perceptions of students’ academic attitudes (for example, whether a student enjoys school or tries their best at school) and students’ own reports of these attitudes. Crucially, they find that these discrepancies are significantly larger when students are from low-income families and certain ethnic minorities.

In the workshop, participants are strongly encouraged to critically discuss the presented academic research and to share their own experiences and views. Reflective, creative group activities will guide the discussions and aim to make the workshop interactive and thought-provoking. We also give participants the opportunity to develop strategies for their classrooms and schools to tackle bias and inequalities.
