The School of Economics PhD candidates can benefit from a range of funding opportunities, from within and outwith the University of Edinburgh. We encourage all applicants to consider the various opportunities available.
College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Scholarships and Studentships
The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Research Award (CRA) is designed to attract high quality students applying for PhD research. In Economics, the CRA covers the cost of tuition fees for the PhD programme in Economics and provides a stipend for three years.
These awards are competitive and you will be considered purely on the basis of academic merit. Factors such as nationality and financial status will not be taken into account.
The deadline to apply is 2nd February 2023. Further information on the CRA award is available on the University’s Scholarship and Student Funding webpage:

Edinburgh Doctoral College Scholarships
The Edinburgh Doctoral College Scholarship (EDCS) is designed to attract high quality students applying for PhD research. In Economics, the EDCS covers the cost of tuition fees for the PhD programme in Economics and provides a stipend of £15,609 for four years, subject to satisfactory progress.
These awards are competitive and you will be considered purely on the basis of academic merit. Factors such as nationality and financial status will not be taken into account.

Edinburgh Doctoral College Scholarships
Research and Teaching Scholarships
The School of Economics offers Research and Teaching Scholarships which pay fees and provides a stipend approximate to UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) rates each year for the full four years of your PhD study.
You will be considered for this scholarship on the basis of academic merit and your potential to provide effective teaching. Factors such as nationality and financial status are not taken into account.
There is no application procedure for this scholarship; your application for entry to the PhD programme will also be considered as an application for the Research and Teaching Scholarship.

Economic and Social Research Council
The University of Edinburgh is part of a consortium of 16 Universities in Scotland awarded funding from the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) to support postgraduate studentships and training in the Social Sciences in Scotland.
Under this Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) Scheme, which is run by the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science (SGSSS), the consortium will consider applications for doctoral studentship awards. Here are details of the application process for doctoral studentships available for 2023 entry.
Our PhD programme is eligible through the Economics Pathway, and the Pathway Representative for our School is Dr Diego Battiston.

ESRC PhD Studentships - Scholarships and Student Funding Our PhD programme is recognised by the UK ESRC, and applicants must apply for the PhD programme beforesubmitting an application to the SGSSS, no later than 8th December 2022.
Economics PhD with Integrated Study
Applicants put forward by the School are required to register on the SGSSS Apply system (which will be launched in October 2022), complete the SGSSS Open Competition application form and upload it to the SGSSS Apply system before 5pm on 8th December 2022.
By the end of January, Pathway Representatives will consider and nominate applicants to move to the next stage of the competition. Nominated applicants will be asked to submit a full studentship application to the SGSSS in February. Final funding decisions will be made by the SGSSS by early May 2023.
If a first year (or part-time equivalent) student is self-funding their PhD, or they are in receipt of financial support not in excess of an ESRC award, they can apply for ESRC funding from their second year, i.e. they must be in their first year when applying. The precise length of award will be determined by SGSSS based on the stage of progress (but may be +2 or +3).
